Heartland Product and RV Comparison Guide

Are you new to the RV lifestyle or not sure the difference between a fifth wheel and a travel trailer? Our Heartland product comparison guide will have you headed toward the right match for you. There is something for everyone in the RV life, so whether you are a solo traveler, family, or retired couple, you will be able to find exactly what you're looking for.

What is a Travel Trailer?

You’ve probably seen travel trailers on the highway or at a campground; they are the most common RV on the open road.  This popular style of RV is towed by a frame hitch that extends from the front of the travel trailer. Travel trailers are a perfect choice for any type of camper because there are lots of floor plans and styles to choose from.

From 22’+ and upwards, you will find plenty of configurations to look at.  Many travel trailers have multiple slide outs to help with space. Slide outs are areas that extend out from the RV once you are set up, making more room inside the RV.  While comparing the different models, you will see that bedrooms can be in the front or back; units can have a bunkhouse, rear living or front living space, and so much more!  They provide the freedom of having a vehicle to enjoy at destinations and a complete home on wheels wherever your travel takes you. This makes travel trailers a favorite type of RV for many.

What is a Fifth Wheel?

The largest type of towable RV is fifth-wheel campers, and they are pulled by large pick-up trucks with a special fifth-wheel hitch located in the bed of the truck. 5th wheels have a raised forward section in the front of the RV where you’ll typically find a bedroom or living space, and they are the most spacious RVs available due to their length and slideouts.   5th Wheels can be from 36’+ and up; these RVs are the ultimate home on wheels.

Pro-tip: Many fifth-wheel RVers will park their towable RV at a campground and detach the towing vehicle for daily travel. As with any towable RV, it's critical that the towing vehicle is rated to handle the weight of the RV plus its contents.

What is a Toy Hauler?

Toy haulers are built to hold tons of gear and outdoor toys. Think RV with a HUGE back end that is all open space!  Motorcycles, trikes, dirt bikes, golf carts, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, and kayaks. You name it; these RVs can probably haul it.

Created with a large garage in the back of the RV, toy haulers have heavy-duty doors that fold down to become the ramps for loading your toys and camping gear into the RV.  Heartland RV toy haulers are made in travel trailers and fifth wheels, so you can choose which style will work best for you.  The combination of comfortable living space and a garage make these the perfect RV for large families, active RVers with tons of gear, or those who want to bring all their toys.
