8 Travel Trailers Under 5000 Pounds

With lots of new campers hitting the roads over the last few years, many people have started asking more about the best travel trailers under 5000 lbs. These lightweight models feel more accessible to beginner campers. Depending on the kind of crossover or SUV you drive, you may be able to tow them with the vehicle you already own.

If you’re looking for an RV with a full suite of amenities, like a toilet, shower, dinette, and complete kitchen, you might think you need to shop for larger models. But at Heartland, we’ve got many travel trailer options under 5,000 lbs. that offer all the amenities you’re looking for. Let’s look at the perks of camping in an ultra-lightweight RV.

Benefits of Travel Trailers Under 5,000 Pounds

When you’re towing a trailer under 5000 lbs., you get a ton of flexibility, easier towing, and excellent maneuverability.

Flexibility

In the off-season, you don’t need a huge property to store your RV. Smaller trailers can be stored easily in a garage or off-site storage facility. And during camping season, they’re typically small enough to fit into any campsite at any campground. You don’t need to book pull-through spots or oversized camping pads, which can be harder to find on short notice. A smaller, lighter trailer makes it easy to switch up your plans and be spontaneous.

Easy Towing

Lighter, shorter trailers can help less experienced campers tow with confidence. Unlike a long, heavy fifth wheel or toy hauler, lighter trailers are more agile and responsive on the road. So for drivers who might feel intimidated towing a heavier trailer, a lighter model can feel more accessible. That means you can swap out drivers more easily on your trip to avoid fatigue.

Maneuverability

Lighter travel trailer models are easier to park, even when backing into a space, resulting in less frustration and faster setup at your campsite.

What Construction Materials Do Travel Trailers Under 5000 lbs. Use?

Thanks to lightweight construction materials, we can build our models under 5000 lbs. with just as much durability and capability as heavier options. We construct our ultralight trailers from components like:

  • Aluminum framing, which offers strength, durability, and protection against corrosion in a lighter alternative to other metals.
  • Azdel composite, which creates sidewalls that are lighter than wood and better at insulating against temperatures, inclement weather, and noise.
  • Aerodynamic radius front caps, which reduce wind resistance without compromising longevity.
  • Plywood flooring, which has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than particle board or solid wood.

When we design our smaller travel trailers, we take particular care in laying out each floor plan to maximize adaptability. When every inch and every pound matters, creating intentional spaces for sleep, storage, cooking, and living becomes more important than ever.

So, if you’re ready to start shopping for travel trailers under 5,000 lbs., these are the top eight Heartland models you should consider.
